Château des Tesnières: A Fairytale Retreat Where Luxury, Art and Gastronomy Meet in the Heart of Brittany
Nestled among ancient woodlands just outside Rennes, Château des Tesnières has emerged as one of France’s most enchanting luxury destinations—where history, world-class gastronomy, botanical gardens, and timeless elegance create an unforgettable escape.
Hidden within a magnificent wooded estate just twenty minutes from Rennes, Château des Tesnières is a place where fairy tales seem to come to life.
Surrounded by rolling gardens and centuries-old trees, the beautifully restored nineteenth-century château offers an experience unlike any other in Brittany. Here, refined hospitality, exceptional gastronomy, inspiring art, and tranquil landscapes come together in perfect harmony, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect with nature, and immerse themselves in a world of beauty.
Painstakingly restored by the Dartnall-Du Plessis family, the château has become both a luxurious retreat and an international culinary destination, led by one of the world’s most celebrated chefs.
A Historic Château Reimagined
Built during the nineteenth century in elegant Neo-Gothic style by the Langle brothers and designed by renowned architect Jacques Mellet, Château des Tesnières possesses a rich architectural heritage that has been lovingly preserved while embracing contemporary luxury.
When internationally acclaimed South African chef Chantel Dartnall first discovered the château, she immediately fell under its spell.
What began as a dream of opening a gastronomic restaurant in France became reality in the summer of 2021, when the Dartnall family acquired the estate. After years of careful restoration, Château des Tesnières welcomed its first guests on 1 May 2025, fulfilling a vision that had been years in the making.
Today, the château stands as a remarkable blend of French heritage and South African creativity.
Home to One of the World’s Most Celebrated Chefs
Chantel Dartnall has earned international recognition as one of the world’s leading culinary artists.
Ranked among the world’s finest chefs by The Best Chef Awards, she has long been recognised as one of the highest-ranked female chefs globally. Her achievements also include being named Chef of the Year for Africa and the Middle East by the prestigious Luxury Travel Guide Awards, reflecting a career built on innovation, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Her arrival in Brittany marks a significant addition to France’s vibrant gastronomic landscape.
Mosaic: A Botanical Journey Between Two Continents
At the heart of Château des Tesnières lies Mosaic, an intimate fine dining restaurant that offers a culinary experience unlike any other.
Rather than recreating the acclaimed Pretoria restaurant of the same name, the French Mosaic represents the next evolution of Chantel Dartnall’s distinctive philosophy—one that celebrates the meeting of South African inspiration and French terroir.
Inspired by the elegance of the Art Nouveau movement, the dining room accommodates just twenty guests, creating an atmosphere of exclusivity and personal attention. Bronze sculptures adorn each table while every detail reflects the château’s artistic spirit.
The cuisine itself is deeply botanical, with flowers playing a central role throughout the tasting menu. Seasonal creations celebrate Brittany’s finest ingredients through dishes such as marinated carrots with yuzu, locally sourced fish, delicate summer truffles, and beautifully composed desserts featuring Valrhona chocolate and cherry blossom.
Each course is designed as both a culinary and visual masterpiece, reflecting Chantel’s belief that every plate should resemble a work of art.
An Exceptional Wine Collection
The culinary experience continues beneath the château.
Its remarkable wine cellar houses an extraordinary collection of approximately 25,000 carefully curated bottles, offering guests an exceptional selection of prestigious French vintages alongside distinguished wines from around the world.
Thoughtfully paired with the botanical tasting menu, the cellar reinforces Mosaic’s reputation as one of Brittany’s most exciting gastronomic destinations.
Six Suites Inspired by Legendary Women
The château offers six individually designed luxury suites, each dedicated to an extraordinary woman whose story has shaped history or mythology.
Guests may choose to stay in suites inspired by the Queen of Sheba, Scheherazade, Anne of Brittany, Empress Dowager Cixi, Mumtaz Mahal, or Yama & Thida of Mandalay.
Every suite tells its own story through carefully sourced furnishings, antiques, artwork, and decorative objects collected during Chantel Dartnall’s travels around the world. Rich in symbolism and authenticity, each room creates an immersive journey into another culture and another era.
Throughout the château, more than 1,300 paintings, sculptures, and works of art from the private Dartnall-Du Plessis collection further enrich the guest experience, transforming every corridor into a gallery of international artistic expression.
Gardens Designed to Inspire
Nature lies at the heart of Château des Tesnières.
The estate’s breathtaking gardens were reimagined by Chantel’s mother, Mari Dartnall, whose vision transformed the landscape over nearly three years of dedicated work.
Guided by a strong commitment to sustainability and ecological preservation, the family has planted more than 150 trees, 6,000 flowering and edible plants, and over 1,000 magnolia trees—the chef’s favourite flower—across the expansive estate.
The result is a living botanical sanctuary that provides ingredients for the kitchen while creating peaceful spaces for guests to wander, reflect, and reconnect with the natural world.
“Where history, botanical beauty, world-class gastronomy and timeless luxury come together, Château des Tesnières offers an experience that feels less like a destination and more like a beautifully unfolding fairytale.”
National Recognition for Culinary Excellence
The château’s remarkable transformation has already received significant acclaim.
At the Hotel & Lodge Awards 2026, held in Paris, Château des Tesnières was honoured with the Chef Award, recognising the extraordinary work of Chantel Dartnall and the entire Mosaic team.
The award celebrates a cuisine distinguished by botanical inspiration, artistic presentation, and a profound respect for local French produce—all interpreted through the unique creative vision of a South African team that has brought fresh energy to the French gastronomic scene.
A New Jewel in French Luxury Hospitality
Château des Tesnières is far more than a luxury hotel or fine dining destination.
It is a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, heritage, and family—a place where architecture, art, gardens, and gastronomy exist in perfect balance.
Whether arriving for an unforgettable tasting menu, a romantic weekend retreat, or simply to experience one of Brittany’s most extraordinary estates, guests leave with more than memories. They leave having experienced a destination where every detail has been thoughtfully composed to inspire wonder.
In a region already rich with history and character, Château des Tesnières has established itself as one of France’s most captivating new luxury destinations.
